The 9000 is the largest classic Ambassadeur and the clever one. Introduced in 1974, it has an automatic two-speed gearbox: it retrieves at about 4-to-1, shifts down on its own to about 2½-to-1 when a heavy fish loads the line, and steps back up when the pressure comes off.
It holds roughly 250 metres of heavy mono, which makes it a boat, pier and big-river reel for salmon, catfish, pike and inshore saltwater fish. The earliest reels have round disc grips on the handle, later replaced by longer grips.
Searches also turn up the later 9000i3 and the gold Big Game reels, which are different models. Our latest snapshot found about a dozen classic 9000s, with red Swedish automatic two-speeds running about $75 to $120 delivered and boxed or early examples higher.
Test the gear shift before anything else, because it is the feature you are paying for and the part that most often sticks.
