Worn pickup pins
The small pins that catch the line inside the cone wear over time, and a worn pickup makes the reel slip on the retrieve instead of winding line.
Check first!
- Retrieve testwith line through the cone, turn the handle; the line should wind on every time without slipping.
- Push buttonpress and release; the line should release cleanly on the cast and catch again as soon as you turn the handle.
- Dragset the drag and pull line; it should slip smoothly.
- Cone holelook for a groove worn into the front of the cone, which frays line.
- Early versionscheck for the Spinner Model 33 marking and metal foot before paying a collector price.

Which one to buy
From Oct 1, 2026 listings
About 36 vintage Zebco 33s are listed, none for parts, and most ask $20–35 delivered. Age is what separates them: the early Spinner Model 33 with a single rivet on the cover and a metal foot is the collector version, and one is listed at just $32. Two-rivet and later chrome 33s are fishing reels, worth the same $25–35. Above $50 you're paying for pristine condition or an unused 2000-era reel. Spincast parts are cheap, so don't pay a premium for a later reel. Fishers should take the $33 two-rivet reel that works; collectors, the $32 single-rivet.

What the 33 is
The Zebco 33 is the push-button spincast reel that half of America learned to fish with. Zebco began as the Zero Hour Bomb Company of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which made timers for oil-well explosives before turning to fishing reels in 1949.
The 33 arrived in 1954 at a retail price of about twenty dollars, the company took the Zebco name in 1956, and Brunswick bought it in 1961. The 33 has been in production ever since, and more than 40 million are commonly said to have been sold.
About 36 vintage 33s were listed in our latest snapshot, most at $20 to $35 delivered. Collectors want the early Spinner Model 33 with a metal foot; later chrome 33s are fishing reels rather than collectibles.
They are simple inside and parts are cheap, so pay for condition only on the early versions, and for a fishing reel buy any one that is tested and complete.
