Shakespeare's Direct Drive reels are small level-wind casting reels, mostly the 1924 Model FK and the 1926; the numbers are model numbers, not years.
A Direct Drive's handle spins with the spool on every cast, so a loose handle nut or a stiff, dirty reel makes it hard to cast and control.
Price range is INFERRED from completed eBay listings; verify against current sold comps before bidding.
About 25 Shakespeare Direct Drive casting reels are listed, none for parts, and most ask $20–35 delivered, mostly the No. 1924 and No. 1926 Model FK. On a direct-drive reel the handle turns whenever the spool does, so you brake the cast with your thumb and keep knuckles clear of the spinning knobs. Cheap and expensive here split on extras, not function: a circa-1951 boxed 1926 asks $34, while a boxed 1924 asks $133 and a free-spool 1937 asks $210, both far over the band. Fishers should take the $28 1924 that the seller says works; collectors, the boxed 1926.

$8.57 plus $8 shipping, $16.57 delivered on Buy It Now: the only Direct Drive here under $20. It's the No. 1927 Model EA rather than the more common FK, and the title makes no condition claim, so ask whether the handle turns without grinding before you buy.
Vintage Direct Drive No. 1927 by Shakespeare Model EA Fishing reel made in USA
A 1926 Model FK graded excellent, $30.62 delivered with Best Offer from a 100% seller, inside the band with the strongest condition claim at this price. Excellent usually describes looks more than function, so ask the seller to confirm the gears turn smoothly through a full rotation.
Vintage Shakespeare Direct Drive 1926 Model Fk Fishing Reel Excellent
The only listing under $30 that the seller says works: a 1924 Model FK at $28.20 delivered, with Best Offer open. Shipping at $10.20 is more than half the item price, so offer a few dollars low. A working direct-drive reel is a cheap way to learn thumbing a cast.
Vintage Shakespeare No. 1924 Model FK Direct Drive Fishing Reel Works
A 1926 FK graded excellent by a seller who tests and tags every reel, so you get written notes on how it runs. At $64.95 delivered it's nearly double the top of the band, and the box is rough; pay it only if a no-surprises reel matters more than price.
EXCELLENT SHAKESPEARE DIRECT DRIVE 1926 FK REEL READ TAG ROUGH BOX
A circa-1951 No. 1926 with its original box, $34.03 delivered with Best Offer from a 100% seller, inside the everyday band despite the box. Compare it with the boxed 1924 asking $133: boxes are what collectors pay for, and this one comes without the premium.

See all current listings on eBay ⟶Shakespeare's Direct Drive reels are small level-wind casting reels, mostly the 1924 Model FK and the 1926; the numbers are model numbers, not years. Direct drive means the handle is connected straight to the spool, with no anti-reverse, so the handle turns as line goes out and you control the cast and the fish with your thumb.
It is an old-school skill worth learning, and these reels are an inexpensive way to learn it. The FK code stamped on many of them marks a production run that began in 1951, under Shakespeare's two-letter dating system, though reels with the same code were sold for years afterwards.
Our latest snapshot found about 25 listings, most at $20 to $35 delivered. Boxed reels carry a premium, while everyday FKs are true bargains.
Because the handle spins on the cast, check that the handle and knobs are intact and tight.
