The 301 is the left-hand-retrieve twin of the Mitchell 300: the same French reel from the Carpano & Pons factory in Cluses, built so the angler cranks with the left hand. It followed the 300 through the same decades and the same changes, from early half-bail versions to the Garcia-inscribed reels sold through Mitchell's American distributor and the letter-coded reels made from 1971 onward.
Garcia's 1973 catalogue listed the 301 alongside the 300 and their C and De Luxe versions. It is just as plentiful as the 300: our latest snapshot found about 36 listings, most at $25 to $50 delivered.
Some sellers mislabel it as right-hand, so check that the photos show the handle on the side you want. Early half-bail 301s and boxed sets with papers are the collector buys, while everyday French 301s make superb light-line trout reels for anglers who reel left-handed.
